In 2007, the Quebec Ministry of Transportation embarked upon the rebuild of the south side of the Galipeault Bridge, the Highway 20 connection between Ïle Perrot and the Island of Montreal.
This project involves the addition of a third eastbound lane on the south side of the bridge and a change to the north side of the bridge to allow westbound vehicles coming from Saint-Pierre Street/des Anciens-Combattants Boulevard to merge more safely and to create an easier access to and exit from Claude and Bellevue Islands. The shoulders will be also be widened to provide greater safety for vehicles that have broken down or been involved in accidents.
The existing bicycle path and sidewalk will be replaced by a multipurpose pathway on the south side of the bridge and a lookout will be constructed for pedestrians and cyclists who take the bridge.
